Scouts BSA - Stay Informed!

For the first time in its 100 year history, the iconic program of the Boy Scouts of America will be open to young women. Troops for girls will be officially launching February 1st, 2019. In Scouts BSA, girls ages 11-17 can join a Scouting program just for them. The program will offer fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness while encouraging youth to be leaders in their homes, schools, and communities.

Current Troop Leaders and those interested in learning more about what it takes to form a Scouts BSA troop are invited to join us for a webinar this month.

#GivingTuesday

The BSA has a proven track record of shaping young people into leaders of outstanding character – people who understand the meaning of accountability and the importance of servant leadership. On #GivingTuesday, November 27, 2018, we’re asking our communities to help us continue that record by supporting Scouting!

There are several ways to support Samoset Council on Giving Tuesday:

Advancement News

Advancement is the method by which we promote and encourage the ongoing involvement and commitment that keeps members coming back for more. It works best when it is built into a unit’s program so that simply participating leads to meaningful achievement and recognition—and to a continually improving readiness for more complex experiences.

Samoset Council uses advancement results in local media stories and council reports.  This information is also shared with foundations, donors and our United Way partners.  Therefore, it is important that we have the most up to date information.  As we near the end of the year, we encourage units to turn in any outstanding advancement reports.

To help update our records you will receive a phone call form the support staff to verify current ranks for your Scouts.  If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Samoset Council office at 715-355-1450.

Scout Spotlight

About a year ago, Nathan Degner (Pack 392) started working on his International Spirit Award, which requires him to organize a Messenger of Peace Project. He started by talking about Operation Christmas Child at a Roundtable with his sister last fall. Throughout the year, Nathan and his family collected items through donations from the community and local Troops. He diligently packed his boxes at home and then took his extra supplies to the charter organization's Sunday School packing party. So far, Nathan has put together 67 boxes with help from his fellow Scouts. By donating his extra toothbrushes, washcloths, soap, combs, and other supplies to the chartered organization, he assisted with 58 additional boxes.

Scouters who earn the International Spirit Award seek to broaden knowledge of international Scouting and increase appreciation and awareness of different cultures and countries.

Safety Moment

The Boy Scouts of America and the National Rifle Association (NRA) have worked together for more than 100 years to develop a strong shooting sports program.

Too often, individual units want to go shooting with whatever guns they have at whatever location they think is safe. However, the BSA Shooting Sports program is both age-appropriate and structured with specific types of firearms and the appropriate places to shoot. Leaders and chartered organizations need to know and follow the program.

This Safety Moment is not an all-inclusive document of every shooting rule available to you, but should serve as a reference document for you to make sure the shooting activities your Scouts are participating in are conducted appropriately and in the safest manner possible.

Safety considerations should be on the top of everyone’s list, especially when dealing with firearms. Check out the Shooting Sports Checklist here!
