Sophia: New Member of Scouts BSA

Sophia and her mom were on a walk past St. Anne’s when they saw a group of young women and men, in their scouting uniforms, hanging out outside. They asked what they were doing & the group told her, “We’re Scouts." The group invited Sophia & her mom into their meeting, gave her a uniform and Sophia decided to join that night!

The group was helping with the Cub Camporee that following Saturday and Sophia decided to join in. When I met her, she told me she’d been in Scouts BSA for 1 week and I asked, "what are you most excited to do in Scouts BSA?" She responded with a simple, "Everything!" And when asked, "What has been your favorite thing so far?" Her answer, so confidently, was "The friendships." Sophia had known no one going into that first meeting and told me that it was so easy to get started, so welcoming.

Sophia’s story is a great reminder to each of us in Scouting that all it takes is a simple invitation and the feeling of welcoming inclusion impact a young person’s life. As we near Fall Recruitment, the question we should be asking ourselves is: what am I doing to create that friendship with our new families?

Wood Badge

As the core leadership skills training course for the BSA, Wood Badge focuses on strengthening every volunteer’s ability to work with groups of youth and adults and is less focused on outdoor skills, which are more effectively addressed in other training courses.

Outcomes: You will have the opportunity to join with other Scouters to share ideas, discuss challenges and locate resources. Attendees form new and lasting friendships during their Wood Badge experiences, Wood Badge is an intense leadership training that will change your life. Wood Badge teaches leadership and team-building skills in a comfortable outdoor setting. There isn’t anything else in Scouting like it. Best of all, Wood Badge is FUN! Please join us on the trail to a mountaintop experience in one of the greatest adventures in Scouting.
