Events 2019-2020 Online Calendar

2020 Charter Renewal

By now your unit should have received the 2020 Charter Renewal packet.  The online charter renewal system opened on October 1 and your renewal code is listed in the booklet enclosed in your packet.  You should have seen the memo stating there will be a membership fee increase.  We hope to learn that fee after October 23.  You can start your charter renewal online, but you won’t be able to complete and submit the charter until the fees have been updated on the system.

Your leaders should have also received an email requesting a new Additional Disclosures and Background Authorization document.  Please include these with your charter when submitting your paperwork to the Council Service Center.  These forms will be required for all adult leaders listed on your charter.

If you need assistance with your charter, ScoutBook or other online applications, the customer service team is hosting Council Help Nights:

  • Tomahawk, Thursday, October 24 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the PCA Training Center (W6147 State Hwy 86, Tomahawk)
  • Stevens Point, Monday, October 28 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Trinity Lutheran Church (1410 Rogers Street, Stevens Point)
  • Wausau, Tuesday, October 29 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM (or any day M-F from 8:30 to 5:00 p.m.) at the Wausau Homes Scout Center (3511 Camp Phillips Road, Weston WI 54476)

If you have questions, please call the Council Service Center at 715-355-1450.

Rechecks of Criminal Backgrounds Explained

You might have seen an email announcing that the Boy Scouts of America will be performing periodic rechecks of criminal backgrounds of all volunteers. Without dedicated volunteers, Scouting wouldn’t be the great, life-changing program it is today. You help make Scouting happen. You can also help make Scouting a safe place for our Scouts.

The BSA is committed to youth safety, so before your 2020 annual registration can be processed, you’ve got to review the disclosure documentation and sign a background check authorization as detailed in the email.

We recognize this requires some extra steps for our volunteers, but it’s one more way we are committed to putting youth safety first.  See the FAQ linked below for further info.

Youth Safety

The safety of children in our programs is the most important priority of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). The BSA’s safeguards highlighted below are key parts of our multilayered approach to help keep kids safe. These measures were informed by respected experts in the fields of child safety, law enforcement, and child psychology, and are among the strongest safeguards found in any youth-serving organization.

Game of the Month

Human Scavenger Hunt (15 minutes)

Divide the group in half and send each half to a different side of the room. The facilitator stands in the center and calls out the 3 or more categories listed below (or others).  Each group has to figure out which combination of people in their group fits the category, and then send those people to the center of the room. The group who gets their representatives to the center first wins a point.

Sample Categories:

  • Two people who have the same first and last initial.
  • The person who was born the farthest away from here and the person born closest.
  • Two people with the same middle name.
  • A group whose ages add up to 50.
  • A group whose shoe sizes add up to 30.
  • A group who have attended school for a total of 38 years.
  • Two people with the same birthday (or birthday month).
  • A group of people who can spell a word by putting together the first letters of their first names.
  • A group of at least three people who all have different colored eyes.

Debrief Questions:

  • Did anything surprise you? What was the most difficult category for your group?
  • Did someone in your group take the lead? How did you figure out each answer?

Summer Camp Staff 2020

Even as the smoke of the campfires still smolder from a great summer camping season, the preparation for the 2020 camping season is well underway. We are currently seeking the best candidates to hire for staff. It is the staff that makes a good camp great and the Samoset Council is blessed with many young men and women who, given the opportunity, will be the program providers to Scouts and leaders who have come to expect only the best from Samoset, Where Camping is King! Applications are due on December 1st!

For more information on being on staff visit our website, contact Samoset Camping at 715-365-3111, or email camp@samoset.org.

Safety Moment

Safety Moments are exactly what the name implies: opportunities to prepare for an activity, review safety measures, and report incidents correctly. This month features bunk beds.

On average, 36,000 injuries related to bunk beds occur in the United States each year, according to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the American Academy of Pediatrics. The head and neck are most prone to injuries due to falls from bunk beds. Our Scouting family is not immune to this risk.
