Hanna Eagle Scholarship

Al and Chris Hanna established a scholarship fund to help support the education of Eagle Scouts attending college. This is a great way to support our Scouts who are preparing for their future through furthering their education. The Al and Chris Hanna Eagle Scout Scholarship Award is open to all Eagle Scouts currently registered with Samoset Council and who have demonstrated leadership in and outside of Scouting.  Samoset Council is now accepting 2019 applications with a due date of January 15, 2020.

#GivingTuesday

The BSA has a proven track record of shaping young people into leaders of outstanding character – people who understand the meaning of accountability and the importance of servant leadership. On #GivingTuesday, December 3, 2019, we’re asking our communities to help us continue that record by supporting Scouting! The first $1,000 in doantions will be matched by our sponsor S.C. Swiderski.

There are several ways to support Samoset Council on Giving Tuesday:

Popcorn Sale

Thank you to everyone who sold, purchased or helped with the 2019 popcorn sale!  Over $1,000,000 dollars of popcorn was sold with 70% directly supporting local Scouting programs in North Central Wisconsin.  All youth who sold over $600 dollars are entered into the Universal Studios Vacation package, so one lucky family will have a bonus gift under the tree this year!  Thank you for your tremendous support of Scouting through the annual popcorn sale!

Membership Fee Increase

Starting on January 1st, 2020 the National BSA registration fee increase will go into effect.  Since we are in the re-registration period, this new fee is being collected now by your Scout leaders. Here is a recap of the 2020 National registration fees:

  • $60 for youth members in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts,
  • $36 for youth members in Exploring, and
  • $36 for adult members

100% of the National BSA registration fees collected by Samoset Council are sent to National Office and used to cover necessary resources such as: general liability insurance, publication development & printing (handbooks, training literature, etc.), Scoutbook and other web-based adult leader and parent resources.  National BSA also provides Scout product and uniform development, camp safety standards, adult and youth training (including youth protection training) among other things.  National BSA registration fees collected pass through Samoset Council to the National BSA organization.

Locally, Samoset Council is the non-profit organization committed to delivering and supporting high quality Scouting programs in North Central Wisconsin.  Samoset Council raises funds annually through a variety of ways, including: Friends of Scouting (FOS), popcorn, activity revenue, foundations and United Way.  Samoset Council provides premier camps and facilities, full time unit support through professional staff, Scout Shop, trained camp staff, council activities, newsletters, training, financial assistance and outreach programs for disadvantaged youth.

Game of the Month

Noisy Forest

  • Time: Approx 5-10 min
  • Recommended age: All ages
  • Size of Group: from 6-8 teammates ideal
  • Time for Prep: None
  • Material: Blindfolds

Game Description:

In the beginning, the kids have to choose one volunteer who is brave enough to enter the noisy forest. This kid then gets blindfolded and has to journey from one side of the room to the other. But this should not be an easy task. Therefore, each player represents a hurdle. As soon as the blindfolded kid comes too close too him, he can make a little noise, so that the blindfolded kid has to change directions. To make this game even more difficult for the blindfolded kid, the other kids (targets) are allowed to change place. This makes it hard, not to lose orientation. this can be a race against time.

The winner would be who makes it through the noisy forest the fastest.

Scout Spotlight

Jordan Brzoznowski is currently working on his Eagle Scout ranking and his project is focused on the River Bend Trail in Merrill.

The River Bend trail is a paved trail running along the prairie river and benefits the community in a variety of ways. My contribution to the trail will be “Tyler’s Playground”, the playground is in memory of Tyler Halbach who took his life at a young age. What Tyler’s playground does is create a quite space/ play area for all people to go to and think, play around, take a break, and just enjoy life. Tyler’s playground will also create awareness for mental health. The project consists of a tee-pee for young children to play in, a natural wood table with chairs for children to sit at, a picnic table for parents to sit at and bring food as well, a tree swing for people of all ages, and I’m also hoping to have a flowerbed to tie everything together. My hopes for my eagle project is to create an enjoyable space where everyone can go and also have it be a quite space when someone just wants to sit down and think for a while. I want to create a space that is unique from surrounding city’s.

Safety Moment

The Boy Scouts of America and the National Rifle Association (NRA) have worked together for more than 100 years to develop a strong shooting sports program.

Too often, individual units want to go shooting with whatever guns they have at whatever location they think is safe. However, the BSA Shooting Sports program is both age-appropriate and structured with specific types of firearms and the appropriate places to shoot. Leaders and chartered organizations need to know and follow the program.

This Safety Moment is not an all-inclusive document of every shooting rule available to you, but should serve as a reference document for you to make sure the shooting activities your Scouts are participating in are conducted appropriately and in the safest manner possible.

Safety considerations should be on the top of everyone’s list, especially when dealing with firearms. Check out the Shooting Sports Checklist here!
