Recruit Scouts With Social Media!

Our traditional methods of recruiting new youth by visiting their schools will not be an option in many cases this year. That doesn’t mean we can’t grow our Scouting numbers!

We just need to be creative. Social media is a safe and effective option for communication with possible new families. A great way to reach parents would be to post and share Facebook and Instagram posts about the ways to join Scouting and the benefits of the program. You don’t even have to come up with your own post. We have several canned options for Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA available on our website at: http://www.samoset.org/recruitment There is also great videos, digital flyers, and posters that you can share. We recommend posting something new every day leading up to the September 17th sign up event to keep people coming back to your page and so they won’t forget. We would also encourage you to share our recruiting events on the NextDoor app (can be downloaded for free) and any local community calendar web pages.

STEM Scouts

Explore science, technology, engineering and so much more with STEM Scouts!

The STEM Scouts program will be available across the Samoset Council for boys and girls in grades 3-8. For 22 weeks, youth will explore science, technology, engineering, and math through fun, hands-on experimentation. There are a few changes to the program this year to allow us to adapt to the COVID environment. All youth will receive their own set of supplies that they will be responsible for bringing to the lab every week. There will be no small group work this year. It will be individual projects that the kids can take home. There will be a completely virtual option in which the youth connect to Zoom for the first portion of the lab, but they conduct the weekly experiment on their own at their home. Some of the activities this year include creating their own 3D animation, exploring magnets, diving into black holes, recreating rock formations, predicting the weather, reconstructing a neuron, and more! COVID-19

COVID-19 Reminders

As an adult leader or parent, ensure you are familiar with our Scouting guidelines for restarting your Scouting unit at Unit Restart Guide. In addition, you can review more at this page of our website  http://samoset.org/COVID19

Beyond resources on our website, many Scout councils and the National BSA have online resources at https://www.scouting.org/scoutingathome/ to help your Scouting unit or your Scout stay engaged in Scouting and earning the life lessons that Scouting has to offer. Just do a quick online search for "Scouting at Home" or other key phrases. If you need ideas on how to conduct virtual programs for your pack, troop, crew, den, or patrol, contact the Scout office at 715-355-1450.

Popcorn Sale 9/26-10/25

Earn 32-36% commission on the sale for your unit's Scouting program while Samoset receives part of the proceeds to support Samoset Scouting programs too.  The sale runs from 9/26 -10/25.  Please do not sell before the start date.  The product line-up has 16 items as well as a military donation option.

Three methods of selling this year:

Show & Sell – Units that signed up for this sale, picked up their product on Friday, September 11.  This sale allows units to order product ahead of time and have it a point of sale.  Try it next year if you want an easy way to sell the product and not have to go back to deliver it!

Take Order – the traditional method of taking orders, then following up at a later date to deliver the product to the customers. Orders are due October 28.  Unit distribution is on November 13-14.

Online – There is an online sale option that should be an integral part of your unit’s plan this fall.  Scouts/parents can share the opportunity to support Scouting through popcorn virtually!  Every unit participating in the sale should maximize this option.  The product line-up is 12 items as well as a military donation option.  Free shipping for online orders!

See below for how to sign your unit up for the sale.  If your Scout unit needs a popcorn sale informational toolkit (order forms, etc.), please contact the Scout Office at 715-355-1450 and we will get one to you.  Learn more about the sale at http://www.samoset.org/popcorn

Youth Protection Training

Youth protection is a critical component of Scouting, and a top priority for our trained leaders.

We strive for excellence in ensuring the safety of our youth and have been updating our safety guidelines consistently to keep our leaders informed on current policy. We require all volunteers and employees to complete the online youth protection training. In fact, our two year renewal cycle is just about up, so make sure to get retrained today! This is necessary to register as an adult leader with Scouting. Our members also undergo a criminal background check administered by a nationally recognized third party in order to eliminate potential threats. In addition, we promote safety awareness at all levels from units to national events by enforcing data protection and working with unit leaders to offer additional guidance, such as hazardous weather training, that help them to navigate the diverse opportunities that Scouting offers.
