THANK YOU again to those that served so well in your previous positions!

We look forward to those that are taking on new leadership roles and those in board leadership roles for the first time, as well as those that are continuing to serve in their positions.

Rick Radloff was recognized for his service at the annual meeting as Council Commissioner for five years. Pictured from left to right are Rick Radloff, Scout Executive John Overland and Council President Thad Brockman.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Schmitt-Manecke-Donner Post 1638 of Merrill, WI was recognized as the Chartered Partner of the Year. For over 48 years, the VFW has chartered Scouts BSA Troop 503 and has chartered Cub Scout Pack 503 for 45 years.

The VFW Post constructed a new building a few years ago with the vision to support not only all their charter groups that support veterans but the two Samoset Scouting units and a Girl Scout Troop.  The new building has dedicated space for each Scout group for storage as well as meeting space.

The award was accepted by Arnold Vilgevac – Post Commander, Corey Dornbrack – Post Member, and Dennis Berndt – Chartered Organization Representative. Congratulations!

Tom Heinrichs of Wausau was recognized as an Honorary Life Member of Samoset. Tom first became involved in Scouting as a youth member, he is the first Eagle Scout of Troop 427 in Wausau. He has held various roles in Scouting over the years to include Tesomas Camp Staff, eleven Wood Badge training course experiences including course director.

Tom has a significant background in construction and has led many projects to improve our facilities – he designed and built (with mostly volunteer labor) the Camp Tesomas Program Center and three buildings for housing summer camp staff. He was on the Akela's World Cub Scout Camp development, fundraising and construction committee. He personally raised over $250,000 in cash and in-kind donations for Aklea’s World. In addition, Tom designed and worked with volunteers to procure timber at Camp Tesomas, kiln dry the wood and then construct the dining hall benches and tables in Rotary Lodge. He was intimately involved in the planning and construction of the Wausau Homes Scout Center alongside Marv Schuette.
Tom was on the Samoset Executive board for 10 years and held the position of Council Commissioner for four years. He directly worked with youth as a Scoutmaster for 25 years and many years as a merit badge counselor where he was well known for teaching Swimming and Lifesaving merit badges.

Tom was invited to talk. He focused on the Scout sign and what the three fingers mean for youth in the program… duty to God & Country, duty to Others and duty to Self. For adult leaders it has a different meaning: character development, citizenship, and personal fitness. In Tom’s opinion, the three fingers stand for: Fun, Friends, and Adventure! Tom, thank you for being an excellent role model!

Unit Highlight - Troop 385
Conservation efforts: an ongoing partnership at McMillan Marsh

Six years ago Scouts from Troop 385, based out of Marshfield, started volunteering at McMillan Marsh – a diverse topography of wetlands and grasslands just north of Marshfield.

As these Scouts moved on they wanted to make sure the work they started was continued with the future Scouts in Troop 385. They contacted the Department of Natural Resources to create an ongoing partnership to become an official “friend” of the marsh.

To this day, Scouts in Troop 385 are carrying on the tradition of volunteering at the McMillan Marsh. The partnership requires 100 hours of volunteer service annually and concentrates on one or two main areas.

The Troop monitors the duck houses that were hung in the marsh along the river in 2020 as part of Shane Bauer’s Eagle Scout project for the Troop.

Earlier this month, the Troop went to the marsh to service the duck houses which involves observing and recording the contents of each house for eggs, shells, feathers, and other nesting materials.

Additionally, they worked on maintaining the houses by cleaning them and resupplying them with fresh mulch to prepare them for the next season.

Scouting connects youth throughout the past and present through programming that teaches lifelong skills and where young people can become leaders in their communities. Troop 385’s important efforts of assisting in conserving the Marsh exemplifies Scouting values through their teamwork, their leadership as positive role models, and service to their community. We are thankful for the hard work of these youth and their leaders and are excited to see the ways they continue to flourish in their personal growth and community involvement in the upcoming years.

Troop 385’s work in conserving the Marsh exemplifies Scouting values through their

Council COVID March 11 Update - Masks Not Required

The Council Risk Management Committee has reviewed our current COVID Guidelines and has provided the following updates:

As our current areas have declining cases of COVID and are listed in the low to medium levels we will no longer require universal mask usage while indoors on council properties including the Wausau Homes Scout Center.

It is recommended that we continue to follow BSA best health practices and current CDC guidelines and adjust your activities and prevention measures accordingly.

General Expectations

  • Individuals may choose to continue wearing masks even when it is not required, especially those who are or live with individuals who are at high risk.
  • Surgical or N95/KN95 masks are preferred over cloth.
  • Individuals experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and close contacts should follow state guidelines for testing and isolation.
  • Continue to use the health screening checklist prior to attending Scout functions.
  • Some local and community orders may supersede this guidance.
  • Vaccines are strongly encouraged for all who are eligible.
  • Proper hand washing and increased sanitation continue to be important tools to prevent spread of illness.

Individual Scout units are chartered/sponsored to various organizations throughout our community and therefore must follow the guidance given to them by their organization when meeting indoors at their locations.

All updates are subject to change as we continue to monitor the status of the pandemic and will make changes as necessary for the health and safety of all. As always, we will continue to keep the most recent information posted on our website.

Individuals may choose to continue wearing masks even when it is not required, especially those who are or live with individuals who are at high risk.

We Can’t Do It Without You! Please Help Us Hit Our Fundraising Goal

The Friends of Scouting Campaign is the lifeblood of Scouting’s fundraising efforts. Each year parents, volunteers, alumni, friends, and business patrons donate time, energy, and financial resources to this much needed yearly campaign. Annual Giving provides the budgetary support for numerous improvements to our properties, expansion of Scouting programs into new markets and increases the chance that every young person in our community will benefit from the impact of Scouting.

Your generous tax-deductible gift to the Boy Scouts of America provides direct funding for educational initiatives and active learning that other funding sources do not cover – is a statement about your belief in Scouting, our programs, our camps and in our belief in educating the entire mind of young people.

In the last three months we have raised $138,000 which is 52% of our goal of $264,000! If you have not yet given and are interested, please visit: https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/SMILEY or text SMILEY to 71777. Please take the time to share our giving page on your social media! Now is the Time to “Do a Good Turn”!

Scouting for Food has been a Scouting tradition in Samoset Council for many years. This important community service event helps make a healthy difference for those in need! As you already know, the need for food is in high demand right now, and we have found many of the food banks and pantries we partner with really do need our help and count on our donations every year.

Scouts participated in the Scouting for Food Drive by distributing bags and flyers throughout their communities on Saturday, April 2. They will return to pick up food donations the morning of Saturday, April 9. Collected donations will then be taken to a local Food Bank or Pantry.

Unit leaders please remember to weigh the food you are donating and send the number to Amanda.flannery@samoset.org. Please take photos of your Scouts in action and share with Lisa Satayut at lisa.satayut@samoset.org.

Now is the time to join Boy Scouts of America, as they deliver on Scouting’s “Good Turn” motto, by participating in the annual campaign in north central Wisconsin. Thank you!

Annual Health Medical Record (AHMR)
What Is It and When Is It Needed?

The Annual Health and Medical Record (AHMR) serves many purposes. Completing a health history promotes health and awareness, communicates health status, and provides medical professionals critical information needed to treat a patient in the event of an illness or injury. It also provides important emergency contact information.

The AHMR is especially important when preparing for high-adventure activities and increased physical activity. In some cases, it's used to review participants’ readiness for gatherings like the national Scout jamboree and other specialized activities.

For any and all Scouting activities—including day events—all participants must compete Part A and Part B (both pages). “All participants” includes parents, guardians, siblings, youth, staff, and unit leaders.

Leaders can obtain the form from the parents and provide a copy for each event. Electronic storage of the forms, by other than the parent or volunteer, is not allowed due to security reasons related to privacy issues.

Though Part C is only required for participation in events lasting longer than 72 hours like summer camp, all Boy Scouts of America participants are encouraged to complete this pre-participation physical during an annual exam performed by a licensed health-care provider.

Safety Moments on the AHMR and how to review the AHMR can be found at: https://www.scouting.org/health-and-safety/safety-moments/

She is afraid of sharks and swimming in the ocean…mostly due to the sharks. Please send news or photos to Lisa so she can share on Facebook! Lisa.Satayut@scouting.org.

Barrier to Abuse  - Buddy System

The Buddy system is critical in preventing youth-on-youth abuse. It ensures that one-on-one adult and youth contact does not take place. It also re-emphasizes the age and genders that should interact, keeping buddies to no more than two years apart in age. It is a prevention strategy for bullying or hazing.

As leaders you are key to the buddy system working to protect youth. The buddy system is important whenever you have a group of youth, not just at camp. The more often you utilize the buddy system, your Scouts will get used to it and it will become easier to use.

The following should be followed when setting up your buddy system.

  • The buddy system must always be followed during Scouting activities.

  • Buddy pairs may only be single gender, never coed (even in older youth programs such as Venturing and Sea Scouts)

  • Buddy pairs should consist of youth no more than two years apart in age.

  • Buddy pairs can only be made between two youth members. Adult program participants cannot buddy with youth members, even if they are registered in the same program.

  • When at camp you may not be able to utilize camp staff as buddies. Camp staff are always treated as adults if they are 18 or older and cannot be a buddy with a staff member or participant under the age of 18.

The buddy system must always be followed during Scouting activities.

According to National BSA Standards, “Pack overnighters must be organized and led by an adult leader who has successfully completed BALOO training.” Without a BALOO trained adult, packs CANNOT participate in overnight camping except at council sponsored events. Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills
Camp Phillips

The Samoset Council invites you to participate in Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS), a hands-on course on how to teach outdoor skills and planning for great youth-led camping adventures with your troop. This course is designed for all Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Troop Committee Members, Arrow of Light Leaders and any registered adult scouter wanting to brush up on their outdoor teaching skills.
You’ll learn how to build a fire, use an axe, cook outdoors, use a map and compass, responsibly care for the outdoors, and much more. Even if you weren’t a Scout as a kid, you’ll come out of this course looking and acting like a seasoned camper. This course, combined with YPT and the Scoutmaster position specific Training, will make you an “fully trained” Scouts BSA leader.

Scouting’s outdoor program is a critical part of how the Scouts BSA program develops young leaders. While camping or participating in other outdoor events, your Scouts will challenge themselves to learn skills they’ve never tried before or maybe didn’t think they could do. In doing so, your Scouts will work together as a team to overcome adversity when things don’t go as planned; this is truly the magic of Scouting that no other program does as well.

  • Friday May 20 at 5pm - Saturday, May 21 at 6pm

  • Located at Camp Phillips, 3511 Camp Phillips Road, Weston WI 54455

National Youth Leadership Training

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

NYLT is a seven-day course. Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster. Any potential youth leader may attend NYLT, but it is most appropriate for Senior Patrol Leaders, Patrol Leaders, their assistants and those Scouts aspiring to these positions. Scouts MUST meet the following minimum qualifications by the start of the course:

  • Be a registered member of a BSA Troop or Venture Crew
  • Be 13 years of age or have completed the 7th grade
  • First Class rank or venture equivalent
  • Attend One summer camp or equal long term camp
  • Complete Introduction to Leadership Skills Training with your Troop or Venture Crew
