Advancement – Simpler to Administer and More FUN!

The current advancement system that the Cub Scout program uses can be confusing for those new to the program.  Beads, go-see-it’s, badges, arrow points… all made more complicated by the fact that each rank takes a different approach!

The new program still utilizes rank advancement, but it is much simpler to administer.  Advancement under the new program will be same for all ranks:

1. Complete seven “adventures”
2. Earn the Cyber Chip award for age group and discuss youth protection with adult partner

…and that’s it!  However, it should be stressed that the program itself was not made easier. It offers appropriate challenges to all Cub Scouts with the goal of making Cub Scouting more active, more fun, and easier for den leaders to implement. Advancement will now be simpler for the den leader to administer because all ranks take the same approach to achieving rank advancement: complete seven adventures.

What is an Adventure?

Adventures are the new basic program unit for Cub Scouts.   Each adventure represents an integrated program that uses a theme to deliver content.  For example, requirements for the Tiger adventure “Team Tiger” are designed to help boys discover their similarities and differences, and how they can help the teams that they are a part of:

1. List the different teams of which you are a part.
2. With your den, make a den job chart that shows everyone doing something to help. As one of the den jobs, lead the Pledge of Allegiance at a den meeting.
3. Pick two chores you will do at home once a week for a month.
4. Make a chart to show three ways that members of your Tiger team are different from each other.
5. Do an activity to help your community or neighborhood team.

The number of required vs. elective adventures varies for each rank, but will always add up to seven total.  Each rank will have a required Duty to God Adventure.

New Program Workshops: Your Ticket to Adventure!

To ensure everyone is ready to make the transition to the new program on June 1, workshops will be held throughout the council in May.  The meetings will outline the coming changes, how to prepare, and provide the new den leader guides FREE to all den leaders in attendance!  In order to get your free book, you must RSVP online by April 29.

Leaders attending a workshop can also pre-order new leader guides, handbooks for boys, neckerchiefs, and neckerchief slides online and receive them at the meeting.
