Keeping Youth Safe Online with the Cyber Chip Award

Quick quiz: According to a 2010 study, how many hours per day does the typical American child spend using some sort of electronic device (such as a cell phone, television, or computer)?  The answer may surprise you!

On average, kids today spend nearly 8 hours per day using digital media for education, research, socializing, and fun.  Whatever their reason for logging on, safety is never guaranteed.  To help keep youth safe while online, the BSA partnered with Netsmartz, part of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, to create the Cyber Chip award.  Cyber Chip was introduced in 2012 as a supplemental BSA safety award, joining others such as Whittling Chip and Firem’n Chit.

Enhanced Youth Protection in New Cub Scout Program

When the new Cub Scout program launches June 1, boys will be required to earn the Cyber Chip award for their age group.  Topics covered in Cyber Chip are based on grade level: 1-3, 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12.  This means that youth in all BSA programs (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, and Explorers) should have an up-to-date Cyber Chip tailored to their unique online experience.  Requirements are interactive and fun and include discussion, watching online videos, and playing games.

To recognize Scouts who have earned their Cyber Chip award, pocket cards and patches are available (blue for Cub Scouts, green for Boy Scouts).

Under the new Cub Scout program each rank also includes a requirement to complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide.

New Program Workshops: Your Ticket to Adventure!

To ensure everyone is ready to make the transition to the new program on June 1, workshops will be held throughout the council in May.  The meetings will outline the coming changes, how to prepare, and provide the new den leader guides FREE to all den leaders in attendance!  In order to get your free book, you must RSVP online by April 29.

Leaders attending a workshop can also pre-order new leader guides, handbooks for boys, neckerchiefs, and neckerchief slides online and receive them at the meeting.

Visit www.samoset.org/program/cs2015.php to RSVP and purchase your new program supplies in advance.
